4/17/2023 0 Comments Iterm vim modeThe biggest eye-opener for me was this little tidbit: To delete everything in between two objects (parentheses, quotes, etc), its as simple as: di Computer: Delete, inside, single-quotes. You tell it what you want, and it does it for you. iTerm 2 is one of the best terminal emulators for any platform, and the window split functionality is only part of that. Vim is built around the idea that you are directly communicating with your computer. Even if you're not using any of tmux's window split functionality, that advantage alone is worth learning the basics of it.įinally, using both is always a good pick. The problem with this is that when I try to select (using the mouse) vim intercepts the mouse. The next logical step Disable visual selection in the mouse options: set mousenicr. I just want to use OS X selection not vim's visual select. However, I dislike using visual mode for selecting. Plus you're learning a tool that can be used on every other major OS, so if you need to do command-line work on another computer you're not using a non-multiplexed terminal like an animal.Īlso, and to echo what a few other people have said, the ability to keep a command line process alive even if you log out of an ssh session is insanely handy for stuff like youtube-dl or compile jobs. I already have the mouse working within iTerm/vim). I spend at least as much time logged into my home Mac over ssh as I do in a terminal emulator running on the machine, and tmux just plain works better in that situation. Use xinput -list to get the id of your pointing device. Like a lot of command-line-vs-gui debates, a lot of what there is to recommend tmux over iTerm 2 as a solution for window splitting has to do with ssh and cross-platform compatibility. This is only a partial solution at best, but you can globally disable the mouse/touchpad while vim is running with xinput in a shell script: xinput set-prop ID 'Device Enabled' 0 And then xinput set-prop ID 'Device Enabled' 1 When youre ready to have the touchpad work again.
